Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 18 September  2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,666) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. 

Since the coup, a total of (27,398) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,908) are currently in detention, (9,423) of whom are serving sentences. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from January 1 to September 18, 2024, (34) women and (71) men; (105) people in total, were killed by the junta in Mandalay Region, including (8) people under the age of 18. These identities have been verified. Among the (105) deceased, (40) people were killed after being detained by the junta.

On the evening of July 17, Aung Myint Myat, a resident of Mandalay City, went missing after leaving home to paint a house in Ohn Chaw Village, Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Region. His family went to look for him and learned that he had been detained at the Ward Administration Office in Kyauk Mee Village, Patheingyi Township. When the family inquired further, they were informed by the office that he had been released at 11:30 p.m. on the day of the arrest, but he never returned home. Upon continuing their investigation at a checkpoint near the office, the family discovered on August 14, that Aung Myint Myat had died on the night of his arrest due to injuries sustained from a severe beating. They were also provided with a photo of his body.
