Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 16 September 2024
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,660) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (27,376) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,888) are currently in detention, (9,398) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
Last week, the junta, who continues to commit inhumane acts, voiced their objection to the report submitted by the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) at the Human Rights Council. This objection serves as a tacit admission by the junta that they refuse to take accountability for their actions, despite the efforts of both domestic and international civil society organizations systematically documenting and revealing solid evidence of how junta forces and their affiliates have targeted civilians to commit international crimes, including the arson of homes and properties, arbitrary arrests and killings, airstrikes, heavy weapon attacks, and sexual violence across the country.
Additionally, over the past week, hundreds of people have been killed or injured, and numerous properties damaged or destroyed, due to severe flooding across the country, including in Nay Pyi Taw. However, the junta’s failure to provide timely storm warnings and conduct effective relief operations, even in areas under their control, has resulted in significant losses for the people. Civilians are currently facing various hardships due to the lack of sufficient humanitarian aid.
