Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 12 September  2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,654) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. 

Since the coup, a total of (27,361) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,874) are currently in detention, (9,392) of whom are serving sentences. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from January 1 to September 12, 2024, (451) women and (911) men; (1362) people in total, were killed by the junta across the country, including (179) people under the age of 18 and (165) people over 60 years old. The identities of these victims have been verified. Among the (1362) deceased, (311) are people from Rakhine State. Moreover, (108) fatalities were caused by the junta’s airstrikes, marking the highest number of deaths, followed by (99) fatalities caused by the junta’s artillery strikes.

On September 8, at 6:50 p.m. and 6:55 p.m., junta forces carried out two aerial bombing attacks using jet aircraft, targeting a location where the Arakan Army (AA) were providing medical treatment to prisoners of war (POWs) and prisoners in Shin Ywar Village, Pauktaw Township, Rakhine State. The attack killed (17) people and injured (10) others. The deceased included Saw Than Maung, Hla Saw Khin, Saw Nyi Nyi (aka Taung Min), Kyaw Thar Maung, Bhone Myat Paing, Maung Thein Tun (aka Nga Mae Khaung), Thein Tun Aung, Kyaw Win Maung, 14-year-old Wai Yan Phyo, 17-year-old Soe Min Aung, and seven POWs.
