Women Behind Bars in the Spring Revolution
September 1, 2024
In this Spring Revolution, there has been no greater display of courage and strength than by the women across Burma, who have valiantly participated in Burma’s political scene throughout the ages. Since the junta unjustly seized state power on February 1, 2021, women across the country have taken a leading role in protests against the military dictatorship. Despite facing dire consequences, namely arbitrary arrest, killing, torture, and sexual violence for these acts of defiance, their bravery and relentless efforts in the fight for truth during the Spring Revolution deserves commendation, respect, and recognition.
According to data collected by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), from the time of the coup in 2021 to August 31, 2024, a total of (5,649) women have been arrested, and (1,132) women have been killed by the junta under political pretexts. The identities of those who have been verified. These figures represent (20.7) percent of the total arrests and (20) percent of the total deaths. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher.
