Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,586) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (2,300) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (27,275) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,808) are currently in detention, (9,361) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 29 August 2024. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (44) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (167) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,467) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from January to August 29, 2024, a total of (339) people; (67) women and (272) men, have been given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta across the country. The Sagaing Region records the highest number of sentences with (236) people. Among the (339) people, (11) have been given sentences of 20 years and over imprisonment, (24) have been given life imprisonment; (3) have been given the death penalty; (2) were sentenced to 25 years in prison in addition to the death penalty; and (5) were sentenced to 25 years and 35 years in prison in addition to the death penalty, all under specious charges by the junta. 

On December 11, 2023, junta forces arrested Aung Hsann Oo and Myo Myint Oo, two reporters based in Myeik working at the Dawei Watch news agency. On August 27, 2024, the Martial Court sentenced Myo Myint Oo to life imprisonment and Aung Hsann Oo to 20 years in prison under the Counter-Terrorism Law.
