Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,515) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (2,300) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (27,211) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,756) are currently in detention, (9,334) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 16 August 2024. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (44) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (167) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,455) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from August 1 to 16, 2024, (11) women and (7) men; (18) people in total whose identities have been verified, were killed by the junta in the Sagaing Region and all of them were killed by the junta’s artilleries. Among (18) deaths, there is a 14-year-old girl and (2) people who were under the age of 60. 

On August 13, at approximately 10 a.m., junta forces at Ma Au checkpoint in Monywa Township, Sagaing Region, opened fire with heavy weaponry. The resulting artillery explosion in Hta Naung Taw Village’s market killed 11 local persons, including a 14-year-old girl, due to artillery shrapnel. Two of them were instantly killed, six died while being treated in the village emergency clinic, and three died while being treated at the hospital.
