Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,501) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (2,300) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (27,201) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,748) are currently in detention, (9,331) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 14 August 2024. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (44) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (167) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,453) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from August 1 to 14, 2024, (9) women and (15) men; (24) people in total, were killed by the junta across the country, including (3) children under the age of 18 and (3) people over 60. The identities of these victims have been verified. Among the (24) fatalities, the number of people killed by the junta’s airstrikes was the highest, totaling (13), followed by (10) deaths from the junta’s artillery strikes. Moreover, among the (24) deceased, the Sagaing Region recorded the highest number of deaths, with (7) people. 

On August 7, at approximately 3 p.m., an artillery shell fired by junta forces stationed in Aung Zay Ya Town on Pathein-Monywa Road, exploded near a paan shop in Htan Taw Gyi Village, Yinmarbin Township, Sagaing Region. The explosion killed Hlwan Moe Thu from Kyay Sar Kya Village, and Myint Than Aung (aka Phoe Wa) and Phyo Zayar from Htan Taw Gyi Village, due to artillery shrapnel. Among those receiving medical treatment for injuries inflicted by the artillery explosion, Ye Ko Ko Toe (aka Phoe Thet Wai) succumbed to his injuries on August 8.
