Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,440) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (2,000) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.
Since the coup, a total of (27,099) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,788) are currently in detention, (9,355) of whom are serving sentences.
There are a total of (124) post-coup death row prisoners as of 24 July 2024. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (44) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (168) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,311) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by the AAPP, from the beginning of the coup to July 24, 2024, (372) people have been sentenced to life imprisonment under specious charges, by courts subservient to the junta across the country and still being detained behind bars, including (6) women and (14) men, a total of (20) people in 2024. Among the (20) sentences, Sagaing Region recorded the highest number of sentences, with (14) people.
On May 10, 2024, junta forces arrested Wai Linn Aung from Seik Khun Village, Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region, for allegedly possessing political photos on his phone. On July 13, the Shwebo Prison Court sentenced him to life imprisonment under Sections 50 (j) and 52 (a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.
