Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 15 July 2024
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,398) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (2,000) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.
Since the coup, a total of (27,067) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,760) are currently in detention, (9,335) of whom are serving sentences.
There are a total of (124) post-coup death row prisoners as of 15 July 2024. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (44) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (168) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,307) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to monitoring conducted by AAPP’s Documentation and Research Department, the junta forces have continuously violated basic human rights by launching offensives into civilian areas, opening fire with various weaponries, and setting fire to civilian houses, depriving them of shelter. On July 8, the junta forces opened fire with heavy weaponry into Khin Ba Lu Village, Salin Township, Magway Region, before raiding and setting fire to it, destroying over 80 houses.
The junta forces have blatantly been committing war crimes by failing to distinguish between military and civilian targets. They have intentionally targeted areas that are considered to be non-military targets, including schools and civilian buildings. On July 9, the junta forces opened fire with heavy weaponry into Let Pan Chaung Village, Kale Township, Sagaing Region. The resulting artillery explosion, near a school in the village, injured three students who were studying there. Additionally, in the early morning of July 12, the junta forces intentionally carried out an aerial bombing on a school and the education office in Hseni Town, Shan State, destroying both buildings.
AAPP will continue to provide updates on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses.
