Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,366) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (2,000) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (27,008) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,707) are currently in detention, (9,275) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (124) post-coup death row prisoners as of 8 July 2024. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (44) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (168) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,301) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by the AAPP, in addition to the various terrorist acts being perpetrated by the junta forces against civilians, incidents of sexual harassment and assault committed by the junta forces towards women in some regions and states has been on the rise. Last week, two junta personnel raped an underaged girl in Chin State, and in another incident,junta personnel verbally and physically assaulted and harassed women in Mon State. The victims of these crimes were threatened not to speak out about them.

Moreover, junta forces, which had been intentionally targeting non-military sites such as religious buildings, schools, hospitals and civilian houses, carried out an aerial bombing using excessive force during the clashes in Matupi Town, Chin State, destroying three religious buildings, along with many houses.
