Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 27 May 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,148) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,800) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,747) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,499) are currently in detention, (9,037) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (124) post-coup death row prisoners as of 27 May 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (167) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,248) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the monitoring of AAPP’s Documentation and Research Department, the junta imposed limitations on the transport of rations and medicines in Dawei, Tanintharyi, Yebyu, Launglon, and Palaw Townships in Tanintharyi Region. These restrictions were purportedly due to locals allegedly supporting the resistance defense forces. These restrictions resulted in a rise in commodity prices in the region, causing difficulties for locals.

Moreover, internally displaced people who had to flee their homes due to clashes between junta forces and revolutionary forces were in need of basic food, shelter, and medicines. On May 22, an internally displaced local, seeking refuge in the jungles due to intense clashes in Tonzang Township, Chin State, died from illness due to the lack of medicine for treatment.

During a clash with the Arakan Army (AA) in Buthidaung Town, Rakhine State, the junta forces, who have been blatantly committing war crimes, and their subordinates, conducted arson and opened fire with heavy weaponry. This resulted in over 6,000 houses, including religious buildings, being lost in the fire.

AAPP will continue to provide updates on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
