Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,129) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,800) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,717) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,474) are currently in detention, (8,999) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 22 May 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (166) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,243) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from May 1 to 22, 2024, (54) women were killed by the junta across the country and there are (3) girls who were under the age of 18 and (12) women who were over 60. The identities of whom have been verified. Among (54) deaths, the highest number of deaths was caused by the junta’s artillery strikes killing (21) women, followed by airstrikes killing (19). Additionally, among the (54) killed,  Rakhine State recorded the highest number of deaths with (15) women.

On May 21, at approximately 3:45 a.m., junta forces carried out an aerial bombing with two jet fighters in Shwe Ba Ho Village, Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, instantly killing Pann Ei Phyu, an internally displaced woman seeking refuge from Maungdaw Town, due to bomb shrapnel.
