
Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,128) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,800) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.
Since the coup, a total of (26,712) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,477) are currently in detention, (9,005) of whom are serving sentences.
There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 21 May 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (166) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,235) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by the AAPP, from May 1 to 21, 2024, (12) women and (16) men; (28) people in total with their identities, were killed by the junta in Magway Region and there are a 14-year-old boy and (5) people who were over 60. The identities of whom have been verified. Among (28) deaths, (22) people were killed by the junta’s airstrikes, recording the highest number of fatalities.
On May 14, at approximately 3 p.m., people were gathering in Taw Ma Village, Saw Township, Magway Region, to receive a distribution of humanitarian aid. Junta forces carried out an aerial bombing with a fighter jet in the village, instantly killing Ma Sann, Khin Sann Aye, Kyin Than, Nay Linn Zaw (aka Phoe Thar), Aung Shwe, and Aung Pyae Shoon (aka Nuu), due to bomb shrapnel. Ma Aye faced a serious head injury due to this bomb shrapnel. She succumbed to her injury on the night of May 15.
