Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 13 May 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,012) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,750) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,667) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,446) are currently in detention, (8,987) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 13 May 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (166) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,221) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

The junta continues to commit mass arrests and killings of civilians with impunity, and is yet to face any kind of accountability for their brutal crimes.

According to the monitoring of AAPP’s Documentation and Research Department, on May 9, the junta conducted an aerial attack on Ah Kyi Pan Pa Lun Village in Kyaukhtu Town, Saw Township, Magway Region, resulting in the deaths of approximately 15 civilians. Additionally, on May 11, junta forces raided Let Htoke Taw Village in Myinmu Township, Sagaing Region, and killed over 30 internally displaced people, including underage children and elderly people, who were seeking refuge in the monastery.

Additionally, after the arbitrary arrests of pro-democracy activists and civilians by the junta, the prisoners were deprived of their rights and were intentionally persecuted. In Daik-U Prison, Bago Region, a political prisoner Linn Linn Tun who was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment died on May 8, due to lack of timely medical treatment for injuries sustained during interrogation.

AAPP will continue to provide updates on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
