Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 18 April 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,897) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,700) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,534) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,342) are currently in detention, (8,931) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 18 April 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (166) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,192) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On Myanmar’s Thingyan New Year, the junta announced, under Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the release of (3,303) prisoners across the country. However, according to AAPP documentation, approximately (100) political prisoners, who had a few months of their sentences remaining, are confirmed as released. This includes Nay Win, the Minister of Social Affairs; Zaw Win, the Minister of Immigration and Human Resources of Kachin State and U Thant Zin Tun, Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of Det Khi Na Thi Ri Township, Nay Pyi Taw. Dr Hkalam Samson, a former head of the Kachin Baptist Convention, was re-arrested at around 9 pm last night, after being released.

According to observations by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, the junta continues to exercise its “four cuts policy” in their controlled townships in Rakhine State, where armed conflict is raging. As a result, civilians are facing a lack of access to humanitarian aid and the threat of starvation due to shortage of basic needs such as food, medicines and commodities.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
