Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,729) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,251) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,119) are currently in detention, (8,842) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 19 March 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (166) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,132) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from March 1 to 19, 2024, (10) women and (10) men; (20) people in total, were killed by the junta’s airstrikes across the country. Among (20) deaths, there are (3) children who were under the age of 18 and Sagaing Region records the highest number of fatalities with (10) people.

On March 16, local defence forces attacked Se Taw U and Kyaung Taik Villages, in Kale Township, Sagaing Region, where junta forces and Pyu Saw Htee militiamen were stationed. During the clash, the junta carried out an aerial bombing with an Mi-35 attack helicopter. The bomb shrapnel caused the death of locals from Kyaung Taik Village identified as Mi Su Wai, Nwe Hnin Soe, Ma Win, Ma Wine, Maung Naing, Tun Wai, Myee, 9-year-old Shwe Kyote, and 13-year-old She Shar.
