Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 19 February 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,561) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,000) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,147) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,147) are currently in detention, (8,783) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (121) post-coup death row prisoners as of 19 February 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (164) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,000) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, following the junta’s announcement of the implementation of the Military Service Law on February 10, the number of arrests across the country has increased, and there have been cases of people going missing without any trace of information about them. In the previous week, the junta established military conscription teams from the Central to Regional and State levels. In addition to creating lists for drafting, they conducted drafts in some regions by drawing lots. Consequently, more and more people are preparing to flee abroad to avoid conscription.

During the clashes between the junta forces and the People’s Militia under their command against the coalition of the Pa’O National Liberation Army in Hsihseng Township, Shan State, since the third week of January, the junta forces’ use of heavy weaponry and airstrikes has resulted in the deaths of civilians, including an infant, and the destruction of markets, houses, and religious buildings. This has led to approximately 70,000 locals fleeing for safety.

Furthermore, the clashes between the junta forces and the Arakan Army (AA) in Rakhine State are ongoing. On February 17, over 200 houses were burned down in Ramree Town due to the junta forces carrying out aerial bombings. Moreover, in most townships, including Yangon and Mandalay Cities, the junta’s allies have been spreading ethnic hatred towards Rakhine people by sharing false news to incite ethnic conflict.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
