Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,545) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,000) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,128) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,128) are currently in detention, (8,781) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (121) post-coup death row prisoners as of 16 February 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (164) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,000) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from January 1 to February 16, 2024, (5) women and (22) men; (27) people in total, were killed by the junta in Magway Region, with (3) deaths who were under the age of 18. Among (27) deceased, there are (12) people killed after being detained by the junta.

On February 14, at approximately 5 a.m., around 200 junta personnel and a coalition members of Pyu Saw Htee militiamen from Myauk Khin Yan Village in Gangaw Township, Magway Region, raided Thin Taw Village in Gangaw Township by firing guns and arrested and took away seven local men, including Maung Pu who was on the way to harvest crops. Then, their bodies were discovered on the road on Pagoda Hill near the village, with gunshot wounds and injuries indicating torture. Afterwards, the junta’s column raided Shwe Bo Village in Gangaw Township, where they arrested and killed locals identified as Toe Lwin, Myo Thant and Zaw Linn Maung, who were seeking refuge from Ye Thar Taw Village.
