Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 8 February 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,506) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,000) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,023) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,064) are currently in detention, (8,772) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (119) post-coup death row prisoners as of 8 February 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (162) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,959) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from February 1 to 8, 2024, (7) women and (21) men; (28) people in total, were killed by the junta across the country, with (5) children who were under the age of 18. Among (28) deceased, Sagaing Region records the highest number of fatalities with (16) victims and (18) people killed after being detained by the junta, recording the highest number of deaths.

Yin Moe who was sentenced to serve 6 years in prison under two charges of Section 505 A of the Penal Code by Obo Prison Court, was unaware of her kidney disease in prison until it was too late and the Prison Department cited security concerns as the reason they could not provide her with full-time medical treatment in a hospital outside the prison while she was suffering. As a result, she died from kidney disease at Mandalay Hospital on February 4, 2024. Although she was transferred to Myingyan Prison in July 2022, her poor health led to her being returned to Mandalay Prison.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
