Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 29 January 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,453) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,000) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,915) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,977) are currently in detention, (8,623) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (119) post-coup death row prisoners as of 29 January 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (162) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,938) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, the junta has denied sufficient medical treatment for the political prisoners arbitrarily detained and imprisoned in prisons across the country. Moreover, due to the lack of timely medical treatment for health emergencies, deaths have occurred inside the prisons.

In clashes between junta forces and revolutionary forces across the country, the junta has been carrying out aerial bombings and indiscriminately firing heavy weaponry, leading to the destruction of civilian areas that are not legitimate military targets. As a result, there have been deaths and casualties among civilians, the majority of whom were trapped.

Furthermore, the junta has cut off telecommunications in Rakhine State, along with blockading land and naval access. This has led to a rise in commodity prices and difficulties in traveling. Additionally, the locals of Sittwe Town, the capital of Rakhine State, have been arrested in large numbers and subjected to threats and extortion of money.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
