Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 22 January 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,416) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (750) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,854) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,952) are currently in detention, (8,544) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (119) post-coup death row prisoners as of 22 January 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (162) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,902) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, starting from early January, infantries of junta forces and police forces and members of the administration team subservient to the junta, have been threatening civilians to join militias by drawing lots in townships in Bago and Ayeyarwady Regions. As a result, locals were fleeing for safety. Moreover, on January 18, the junta arrested 11 local men who refused to attend the militia training in Thayarwady and Nattalin Townships in Bago Region.

The junta forces, who have been committing crimes against humanity, launched an offensive into villages to carry out arrests and torture of civilians, before inhumanely killing them on a constant basis. On January 18, a military column raided Me Oe Village, Tabayin Township, Sagaing Region, and took away 15 locals as human shields to Ye-U Township. Five of them were discovered dead, while the remaining 10 are still under enforced disappearance at the time of this writing.

Furthermore, on January 14, 2024, the Arakan Army (AA) completely captured Paletwa Town in Chin State. In response, the army, navy, and air force of the junta in townships in Rakhine State have been firing various weapons on an almost daily basis, targeting civilians. As a result, the rate of deaths and casualties of civilians has been on the rise, and the junta has been blatantly committing war crimes such as setting fire to civilian houses and properties, along with destroying historical heritage sites.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
