Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 2 January 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,275) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (750) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,690) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,891) are currently in detention, (8,436) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (119) post-coup death row prisoners as of 2 January 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (162) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,799) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

In recent weeks, clashes across the country have intensified, leading to a rise in the number of IDPs. Unfortunately, IDPs face numerous hardships, including life-threatening dangers with their right to receive humanitarian aid still denied. Simultaneously, prison staff, operating under the junta’s command, have subjected political prisoners to severe torture in prisons. Due to the inadequate food and healthcare, political prisoners are enduring suffering to the point of death.

According to observations by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), within the one-year period between 1 January and 31 December, 2023, a total of 1,594 people, including 193 children under the age of 18, were killed by the junta through various means. Additionally, 2,112 civilians from all walks of life were arrested in connection to the Spring Revolution. Among those arrested, 43 were children under the age of 18. In 2023, 38 people were sentenced to death, and 8 of them received multiple death sentences. These figures are based on data documented and compiled by the AAPP within a year and will be updated as new information becomes available.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
