Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (8,200) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

A total of (31,563) people have been arrested by the junta for opposing their arbitrary seizure of power. Of those arrested, (14,594) are confirmed to still be in detention, while (7,924) remain to be verified.

These are the numbers reported by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from January 1 to July 23, 2026, (28) people in total; (11) women and (17) men, were killed by the junta in Tanintharyi Region, including (2) children under the age of 18. The identities of these victims have been verified. Among them, (16) people were killed by the junta’s airstrikes, marking the highest cause of death, followed by (6) people who were killed in various ways after being detained by the junta. During the stated period in that region, the AAPP has also received information regarding the death of (35) civilians, as a result of junta attacks, whose identities have yet to be confirmed.

Three members of the Ants Humanitarian Aids Team—team leader Aung Zaw Phyo (aka) Ah Thar, member Aung Myat Thu (aka) Thar Ngal and finance officer Wai Yan Aung (aka) Leon—were actively providing education and relief efforts for internally displaced persons (IDP) in the Dawei area. On July 9, these three individuals encountered a military column of junta forces that had launched an offensive near Dawei Special Economic Zone, Tanintharyi Region and were subsequently apprehended. On the morning of July 20, locals found the bodies of the three individuals near Aye Ka Ni Village, with injuries consistent with torture.
