Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 2 October 2024
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,726) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (27,502) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,006) are currently in detention, (9,471) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by the AAPP, from September 1 to 30, 2024, (22) women and (75) men; (97) people in total were given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta, and are still detained in prisons across the country. Among (97) sentences, the Sagaing Region records the highest number of sentences with (87) people. Among (97) sentences, most of them are sentenced under different sections of the Counter-Terrorism Law. There are (1) people who have been sentenced to life imprisonment and (56) people who have been sentenced to 10 years or more imprisonment.
Junta forces arrested Naing Soe from Thi Tin Village, Pale Township, Sagaing Region, for allegedly providing financial support for the purchase of weapons and rations for members of the People’s Defense Force. On September 26, the military tribunal sentenced him to life imprisonment under Section 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.
