Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 4 May 2026

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (8,003) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

A total of (30,924) people have been arrested by the junta for opposing their arbitrary seizure of power. Of those arrested, (14,175) are confirmed to still be in detention, while (7,874) remain to be verified.

These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On April 30, 2026, the Kason Full Moon Day, the junta announced that they would continue to detain State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi in a residence designated by them, but did not confirm where or how she was being held, and restricted access to her family. This action constitutes an enforced disappearance of the State Counsellor and is a denial of the basic rights to which a prisoner should be entitled. In addition, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) confirmed that only five political prisoners, who had been arrested under charges related to the [Protection of] Elections Law, were released on that day.

The junta continues to attack civilians almost daily, and according to AAPP’s observations, approximately (118) civilians were killed by airstrikes in April. On April 27, an airstrike on Ba Han Village, Thandaunggyi Township, Kayin State, killed six people, including a one-month-old child. On April 29, at least nine civilians were killed when the junta conducted an aerial bombing in Kyin Dway Town, Kanpetlet Township, Chin State.
