Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (8,203) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
A total of (31,585) people have been arrested by the junta for opposing their arbitrary seizure of power. Of those arrested, (14,598) are confirmed to still be in detention, while (7,925) remain to be verified.
These are the numbers reported by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
The conditions of inmates in prisons across Burma continue to deteriorate in all aspects. Inmates have lost their lives due to a lack of access to adequate medical care and poor health caused by overcrowding and a lack of nutritious food. They are also subjected to various forms of oppression, including beatings, solitary confinement, and prison transfers when they demand their rights or commemorate significant days.
The deaths of Hlaing Bwar, a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), who was serving a long prison sentence under the Counter-Terrorism Law in Mandalay (Obo) Prison, Mandalay Region, and Tun Myint (aka Pauk Sa), who was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labor under Section 50(i) of the Counter-Terrorism Law in Paungde Prison, Bago Region, continue to highlight the dire prison conditions.
In addition, on July 19, inmates in Monywa Prison in Sagaing Region silently observed the 79th anniversary of Martyrs’ Day, during which prison authorities threatened the inmates and forcibly took away the leaders of the commemoration. This incident continues to reveal how restricted the rights of prisoners are.
