June 2009 AAPP Monthly Chronology

Summary of Current Situation
There are a total of 2,160 political prisoners in Burma.

Since the protests in August 2007 leading to last September’s Saffron Revolution, a total of 1,086 activists have been arrested and are still in detention. During the month of June 2009, at least 9 activists were arrested and 3 were sentenced. 1 political prisoner was transferred, and 5 were released after completing their sentences. An increasing number of political prisoners – now 136 – are in poor health due to the harsh prison conditions, transfers to remote prisons where there are no doctors, and the denial of proper medical care.
