Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 23 September 2024
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,688) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (27,424) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,934) are currently in detention, (9,442) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
Despite severe flooding across the country, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of people and the destruction of numerous properties, the junta continued to commit human rights violations, including multiple airstrikes in areas where they have lost control. On September 13, 2024, junta forces conducted aerial bombings in Hseni Township, and on September 21, 2024, they launched further airstrikes in Nawnghkio and Lashio Townships in Shan State, causing civilian casualties, deaths and property destruction. Between September 11 and 22, 2024, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) documented and confirmed the death of 23 people due to junta forces’ actions, during the floods. Of these 23 people, 17 people died as a result of airstrikes.
Additionally, initial reports indicated that prisoners from Insein Prison in Yangon Region and Monywa Prison in Sagaing Region were subjected to transfers, without their families being informed.
