Letter of Condolence for the Passing of Nelson Mandela (2013)

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) wishes to express our grief at the death of Nelson Mandela. His vision of a free and equal South Africa has had a profound influence on AAPP (B), his words have often provided the strength to keep going in our darkest times. For former political prisoners the suffering he endured and his unwavering commitment to his principles has and will continue to inspire us as we continue to fight for the same ideals he did.

He, like many political activists in Burma, was willing to sacrifice his safety, his liberty and his life in order to defend the ideals of freedom and democracy human rights activists are still fighting for. He spent more than 27 years of his life incarcerated for what he believed was right, and this will always serve as a shining example to those who dedicate their lives to the struggle for equality and democratic freedom around the globe.

Our condolences go out to his family, friends and the people of South Africa. His compassion and willingness to seek reconciliation and unity is a quality we should all aspire to. For political activists in Burma, we will be forever grateful for Nelson Mandela, a man whose legacy will endure as we continue to work towards the freedoms he fought so hard to achieve.
