Date: 17th June 2018
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) publicized the AAPP counseling program on its Facebook page..
The AAPP counseling program can help to decrease symptoms of depression and stress that are caused by difficult situations relating to family, married life, livelihood, education, health, and so on
The AAPP counseling program was established in 2011 in Mae Sot, Thailand. The program was then rolled out in Burma in 2013. The program received technical support from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and it is run according to guidelines recommended by Johns Hopkins professors. The program is currently made up of one department chief, two trainers, four clinical supervisors, and eighteen counselors working in Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Magway, and Mae Sot (Thailand).
The AAPP counseling program has already provided approximately 2,200 clients. Over the past eight years we have offered counseling to former political prisoners and their family members, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), former child soldiers, HIV patients, refugees, migrant workers, LGBT communities, and survivors of human trafficking, rape, gender-based violence, and torture.
Further, in 2016 AAPP met with Dr. Win Myat Aye, the Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, to discuss collaboration between the counseling program and the Ministry. As a result, in early 2017, and with the Minister’s approval, AAPP began providing counseling in the Women’s Development Center, the Women’s Vocational Training School and Hnget Aw San Boys’ Training School.
The counseling program can help with the following:
- Decreasing the disturbance of negative thoughts and feelings;
- Improving relationships with family, friends and others;
- Improving concentration at work to reduce negative experiences in the workplace;
- In the case of alcohol dependence, the counseling program can help change problematic drinking habits.
Note: We (this program) guarantee complete confidentiality for all clients. Information disclosed during counseling sessions will never be shared without the client’s prior consent.
AAPP’s counselors can visit clients’ homes to deliver counseling sessions, or clients may come to the AAPP office to attend their counseling sessions. If you would like to find out more, please contact:
