Letter of Condolence for the Passing of U Ko Ni 2017

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) were deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely death of U Ko Ni and taxi driver U Nay Win at Yangon airport yesterday evening.

Known to many of us on a personal level, AAPP recognized U Ko Ni as an integral part of the democratization process and human rights movement in Burma, a fantastic lawyer, and above all a good and honourable man. He was a key player in the mass amnesty of political prisoners in April 2016, an ally and friend of AAPP. His death is a tragedy, and he will be sorely missed.

AAPP urge the National League for Democracy (NLD) to take immediate action and commence an impartial and transparent investigation into these deaths to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice, send the message that actions of this sort are unacceptable, will not be tolerated by the new Government or go without punishment, and to bring much needed closure to those close to them.

On behalf of all staff at AAPP, we would like to send our deepest sympathies to U Ko Ni and U Nay Win’s families and friends. You are in our thoughts at this hard time.
