Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 21  October 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,851) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (27,563) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,020) are currently in detention, (9,473) of whom are serving sentences.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring conducted by AAPP’s Documentation and Research Department, junta forces, who have consistently committed basic human rights violations against civilians, raided villages in various regions and states of Burma. They captured local civilians, using them as human shields, torturing and killing them, as well as setting fire to their homes. On October 18, junta forces raided Si Par Village, Budalin Township, Sagaing Region, and brutally killed six civilians, including mentally ill individuals, by dismembering their bodies.

Junta forces also stationed themselves in villages in Puta-O Township, Kachin State, where they arrested and interrogated locals. As a result, civilians fled into the mountains and jungle to seek refuge. Many of these civilians fell ill while displaced. Additionally, junta forces cut off trade and communication routes in townships along the Chindwin River in Upper Sagaing Region. The displaced locals, who sought refuge elsewhere, are now facing severe shortages of basic rations and medicine and are suffering from dire health conditions.
