Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 3 October 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,732) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. 

Since the coup, a total of (27,507) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,011) are currently in detention, (9,471) of whom are serving sentences. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, during the period spanning from January to September, 2024, (20) women and (18) men; (38) people in total from the education sector including students and teachers were killed by the junta across the country. The identities of those who have been verified. Among (38) deceased, Shan State records the highest number of deaths with (14) people and the number of people killed by the junta’s airstrikes was the highest with (29). In addition, within a span of 9 months, (9) women and (5) men; (14) people in total from the education sector, were arrested in relation to the Spring Revolution by the junta across the country, with Tanintharyi Region records the highest number of arrests with (5) people.

On September 5, junta forces carried out an aerial bombing using two 500-pound bombs deployed by jet fighter aircraft, targeting the Cherry Land Federal Education Center, which was located in the Ban Kok Internally Displaced People’s Camp, killing six students instantly —Kyaw Ye Linn, Thet Thet Moe, Tin Yii, Ohn Yii, Wai Wai Aung, and Francisco— due to bomb shrapnel.
