Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 9 September  2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,630) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. 

Since the coup, a total of (27,343) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,859) are currently in detention, (9,382) of whom are serving sentences. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring conducted by AAPP’s Documentation and Research Department, in the past week, junta forces have been conducting airstrikes across the country. These airstrikes targeted Pekon, Manton, Namhkan, and Nawnghkio Townships in Shan State, Demoso Township in Kayah State, Natogyi and Kyaukpadaung Townships in Mandalay Region, Myaing Township in Magway Region, Tigyaing Township in Sagaing Region, and Yedashe Township in Bago Region. As a result, around 50 civilians, including pregnant women and children, were killed, and civilian infrastructure and businesses were destroyed.

Additionally, a coalition of junta forces and Pyu Saw Htee militiamen, numbering around 180, launched an offensive into most of the villages in Khin-U and Kanbalu Townships in Sagaing Region, setting houses on fire. As of September 6, around 200 houses had been destroyed by the fires.
