Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,570) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (2,300) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (27,257) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,792) are currently in detention, (9,346) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 27 August 2024. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (44) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (167) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,465) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from August 1 to 27, 2024, (40) men were killed by the junta across the country,  including (2) men from the media sector. Their identities have been verified. 

On August 21, at approximately 9 a.m., junta forces raided the house of freelance journalist Htet Myat Thu in Let Pya Village, Kyaikto Township, Mon State, following reports that members of the local revolutionary forces were allegedly present at his residence. During the raid, junta forces opened fire with firearms, instantly killing Htet Myat Thu and journalist Win Htut Oo from the Democratic Voice of Burma media organization, who were also inside the house, due to gunshot wounds.
