Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 6 May 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,967) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,750) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,626) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,411) are currently in detention, (8,973) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 6 May 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (166) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,215) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the monitoring of AAPP’s Documentation and Research Department, the General Administration Department, under the command of the junta, which has been consistently committing human rights violations, issued a local order in Myo Thit Ward, Hakha Town, Chin State, on April 22. This order restricted gatherings to no more than 5 people until June 20, 2024. Consequently, Christians in the ward were unable to attend Church, and churches were facing trouble holding communion.

Moreover, the junta has been violently suppressing civilians, including civil servants, who are protesting against the dictatorship, in various ways. The Ministry of Health, under the command of the junta, sent a letter to Aye Thandar Private Hospital in Dawei Su Ward, Mawlamyine Town, Mon State, in April, ordering it to close for three months starting from May 1. This closure was due to the doctors, employed at the hospital, participating in the CDM.

AAPP will continue to provide updates on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
