Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,752) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,256) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,124) are currently in detention, (8,843) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (123) post-coup death row prisoners as of 20 March 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (166) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,132) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from March 1 to 20, 2024, (16) women and (21) men; (37) people in total, were killed by the junta in Rakhine State and there are (13) children who were under the age of 18. Among (37) deaths, (24) people were killed by the junta’s airstrikes recording the highest number of fatalities.

On March 18, at approximately 1 a.m., junta forces conducted an aerial bombing with a fighter jet on Thar Dar Village, Minbya Township, Rakhine State, despite no clashes occurring. The village housed internally displaced people, alongside locals. The bombing resulted in the instantaneous deaths of nine locals including Maw Lawi Har Ban Ali, from Thar Dar Village, and 13 individuals including Ar Zoo Ro, from Hsin Gyi Pyin Village in Minbya Township, who had sought refuge in Thar Dar Village, from bomb shrapnel.
