Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 5 February 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,484) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (1,000) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,972) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,034) are currently in detention, (8,720) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (119) post-coup death row prisoners as of 5 February 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (162) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,938) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, the junta arrested six civilians from Yangon and Mandalay Cities who participated in the Silent Strike and White Campaign alongside other citizens across the country on February 1, 2024, to commemorate the third year since the junta’s unlawful seizure of state power. After the coup, the junta has been continuously carrying out violent crackdowns on peaceful protests, arbitrarily arresting, detaining, and imprisoning individuals, thereby violating the freedom of expression.

In the previous week, the junta restarted its aerial attacks in Tanintharyi Region once again. In addition to firing heavy weapons, they also dropped bombs from the air onto the battlefields where the junta forces clashed with the PDFs in Tanintharyi and Kyunsu Townships. As a result, the locals had to flee for safety.

In addition, the junta has been using excessive force to carry out aerial attacks with heavy weapons at non-military target areas, including religious buildings, without discerning military or civilian targets during the clashes or without any clashes occurring, resulting in great material loss.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against: CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to it, please submit to the following address: doc_data_team@aappb.org
