Summary of current situation

There are a total of 2162 political prisoners in Burma.

Since the protests in August 2007, leading to last September’s Saffron Revolution, a total of 1071 activists have been arrested. Following the sentencing of at least 224 activists in November, trials slowed in the month of December. 5 activists were sentenced, 9 were released and 11 were arrested. One of the activists sentenced, Kay Thi Aung (female), was given 26 years imprisonment for her role in helping cyclone victims.
