Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 3 January 2025
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,106) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (28,096) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,499) are currently in detention, (9,958) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by AAPP, from January 1 to December 31, 2024, (781) people in total; (1) LGBT, (213) women and (567) men, were arrested politically by the junta across the country. Among them, (759) people in total; (1) LGBT, (212) women and (546) men, are still detained. Of those arrests, Yangon Region records the highest number of arrests, with (208) people, followed by (125) in Mandalay Region.
On February 21, 2024, Khant Zayar Linn from No (38) Ward, Dagon Myothit (North) Township, Yangon Region, was arrested by junta forces. On October 9, 2024, a military tribunal sentenced him to death under Section 49(c) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Additionally, on the same day, he received an extra 10 years in prison under Sections 50(j), 52(a), and 51(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.
