Conditions of Detainees in Police Battalion #7, Rangoon

Information Release
September 21, 2007

The military regime has arrested over 200 activists since protests against fuel price hikes in Burma began on August 19th. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) (AAPPB) has learnt that activists have not only been beaten whilst in detention, but have also been under extreme physical and mental torture during the investigation period.
Out of those detainees, 46 activists are currently being held under the following conditions in Police Battalion #7, located near Kyauktan Township in Rangoon.
• No healthcare is provided.
• They have no access to adequate water supply.
• They have no access to adequate food supply.
• No mosquito nets are provided, although there are lots of mosquitoes.
• Those who are obviously in poor health conditions are not given any medicine.
• Cell windows are permanently shut.
• Barbed wire has been placed around their cells, and they are guarded 24-hours a day by armed personnel.
Due to coping with the aforementioned circumstances, the health conditions of detainees are seriously deteriorating; they are all facing skin diseases and malnutrition.
In particular:
Thant Zin Myo is suffering from severe pain in his body and chest and a high fever. He has arthritis, and was beaten during his arrest.
Than Zaw Myint is suffering from severe pain in his back and abdomen, because he was beaten whilst being detained. As a result, he cannot currently sit down.
Myo Khin is suffering from frequent and severe stomach cramps as he has a gastro-intestinal infection. He also suffers from hypertension.
Myint Aye suffers from severe diabetes.
Zaw Nyunt’s health condition is unknown, and we are extremely concerned as he was taken away by authorities a week ago.
Ends.
