January 11, 2006

Three political prisoners, Ko Aung San Myat, Ko Thiha Tun and Ko Han Win Aung were injured in Insein prison, after being beaten by some criminal convicts: Ko Aung Min Lwin, Ko Aung Zaw Oo, Ko Kyaw Oo and Ko Thein Tan, on January 2, 2006, according to reports.

Ko Aung San Myat was also beaten on December 18, 2005, so this is the second time for him during a very short period. These three political prisoners were beaten in front of the jailor, Win Maung and others prison guards.

Because of the beating, Ko Aung San Myat recieved injuries to his face, and Ko Thiha Tun and Ko Han Win Aung were also injured. However, prison authorities haven't taken any action against those who beat these political prisoners.

Last year, in 2005, this kind of brutality occurred twice. At that time, prison authorities didn't take any action against those who committed these offences.
Criminal prisoners have received special privileges in the prison by bribing prison authorities.

According to political prisoners in Insein Prison, the incident occurred after the political prisoners were shuffled from the cells to the ward where criminal convicts are held.
